Project Summary
The Top Connections Widget brings the people who matter most to the center of the Amazon's Echo Show home screen. Designed to support spontaneous, everyday connection, it surfaces a customer’s most important contacts by using smart signals and usage patterns. With just a single tap, customers can start a call without needing to reach for their phone. Launched in 13 countries in September 2023, the widget now appears on the home screens of millions of Echo Show devices worldwide.
My Role
As the design lead for this zero-to-one experience, I worked on the end-to-end user experience and visual design from early vision work through global launch. In 2022, the Alexa Communications organization at Amazon introduced a new vision: to focus on helping customers stay connected with their closest loved ones, rather than serving as a general-purpose communication tool.
To help define and align around this shift, I initiated and led a 4 day cross-functional workshop with stakeholders from design, research, engineering, and leadership. This work shaped the organization’s new three-year North Star strategy and influenced product roadmap. The early concepts for the Top Connections Widget emerged from that workshop and were later prioritized as a VP-level goal to deliver in 2022.
I translated the concept into a tangible product by defining the experience strategy, designing custom components and interaction patterns, facilitating user testing, and working closely with engineering to build and refine the experience across Echo Show devices. I also collaborated with localization team to ensure the widget scaled effectively across 13 countries and reached millions of customers.
Impact
Product Impact
The Top Connections Widget launched across 13 countries and reached over 13 MM customers. With its simple one-tap design, the widget generated over 62 MM touch interactions in the first few months and led to a 32% increase in overall Alexa Communication engagement.
Organizational Impact
I played a key role in shaping the new strategic direction for the Alexa Communications org introduced in 2022. As the organization shifted its focus from being a general-purpose communication service to supporting in-home connection and strengthening relationships with customers’ closest loved ones, I helped translate that vision into a clear product strategy and experience direction.
I helped shape the 2022 strategic pivot toward in-home communication and contributed to defining the organization's three-year North Star vision and roadmap.
I led a four-day cross-functional design workshop with 21 participants and 9 leadership stakeholders across Design, Research, and Engineering.
The outcomes of the workshop, including the early concept for the Top Connections Widget, were selected as VP-level goals to launch in 2022 and directly influenced future roadmap priorities.
What I'm excited to bring to my next journey
The Top Connections Widget gave me the chance to lead a zero-to-one experience from early concept to global launch. I kicked off the vision through a multi-day design workshop with partners across design, research, engineering, and senior leadership. This collaborative process helped align the team around a new strategic direction for the Alexa Communication org, grounded in real customer needs.
I translated that vision into a clear product strategy and carried it through research, concept validation, and development. By aligning teams, making smart trade-offs, and focusing on simplicity, we delivered a feature now supporting millions of users in 13 countries. In my next role, I’m excited to bring that same clarity, collaboration, and thoughtful execution to build experiences that are both impactful and easy to use.
